History

The Firm was founded in 1996 when Barney Reitner and John Stuart formed the partnership.  The offices of Reitner & Stuart were located in San Luis Obispo, California and in Bethesda, Maryland.  In 1997, the offices in San Luis Obispo were relocated to Marsh Street where they stayed for the next twelve years.

Barney hired Lora Walters as Legal Secretary in 1998 doubling the size of the San Luis Obispo office.  Since email had not really taken off, most daily correspondence was done via the fax machine and telephone.

In 2001, John left Maryland and moved to California to join Barney in San Luis Obispo.

Kenneth E. Moore was hired as an Associate in 2003 and he moved to San Luis Obispo from Santa Barbara.

Sam Moore joined the Firm in 2004 as Operations Assistant.  His task was to organize the day-to-day business and update the technology.

The Firm was known as Reitner & Stuart until 2005 when Ken was named partner. The name was then changed to Reitner, Stuart & Moore.  Later that same year, Barney announced his retirement from the partnership and remains as Of Counsel to the Firm.

Sam was named Office Manager in 2007 and took over the daily duties of running the Firm.

In 2009, the Firm changed its name to Stuart | Moore and moved its offices to its current location on Higuera Street.

In the latter half of 2013, Richard J. Perry, Jr. joined the Firm as Of Counsel. He works out of his offices in the Washington D.C. area.

Michael K. Staub joined the Firm in June of 2014 as Of Counsel. He moved to San Luis Obispo from western Idaho. He practiced law in both Idaho and Washington and has bar memberships in both states and California.

At the same time Mike was moving to San Luis Obispo, John was moving to Sonoma, California. With his office conveniently located, John worked more closely with the Firm’s Bay Area clients.

The Firm changed its name to Stuart | Moore | Staub in 2017, when Mike Staub became a Partner. In March of 2017, John Stuart stepped down from being a Partner and became Of Counsel to the Firm. John then retired from practice at the end of 2020.
